Volvo FH vs FM for African Quarry Use: Which One Should You Buy?
FH and FM look similar but suit very different jobs. Here's how UK-export buyers in Kenya, Tanzania and Nigeria should choose between them for quarry, tipper and long-haul work.
If you're sourcing a used Volvo from the UK for African operations, the first decision is FH or FM. They share driveline parts but they're built for different work.
The FM is the workhorse. Lower cab, lighter chassis, designed for construction, tipper bodies and 8x4 rigid configurations. For quarry sites in Athi River, Geita or Lagos suburbs, an FM 8x4 with a steel tipper body is the default choice.
The FH is the long-haul tractor. Higher Globetrotter cab, sleeper, optimised for fuel economy at motorway speeds. If your route is Nairobi–Mombasa, Dar–Mwanza or Lagos–Onitsha pulling a trailer, the FH 6x4 is what you want.
Mechanically both use the D13K engine and I-Shift gearbox in most 2014+ specs, so parts availability is similar. The cab and chassis are the real difference. Buy for the job, not the badge.
